Dr. Anthony Michael Giampetro

Dr. Anthony (Tony) Michael Giampetro, 89, of Bryn Mawr, PA, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026 at the Dunwoody Care Center in Newtown Square.

Dr. Giampetro was born April 28, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Anthony (Andy) Giampetro Sr. and Theresa DeVito Giampetro. He attended LaSalle University and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. “Dr. G” practiced Internal Medicine with a specialty in Cardiopulmonary Disease for 53 years in South Philadelphia with his beloved partners Dr. Francis Bellarmino and Dr. Thomas Scheuerman.

He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force 1963–1968, stationed in Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He cared for many of the wounded transported home from the Vietnam War. He rarely spoke of this time in his life, if only to say the memory stayed with him always.

Tony was married to his devoted wife Susan (DeStefani) for 59 years, and they welcomed three children Anthony Jr., John, and Celeste.

Practicing medicine was his calling, one in which he took exceeding pride and joy. In addition to his practice in South Philadelphia, he worked with several hospitals including St. Agnes, Methodist, and Jefferson. He was responsible for starting the Pulmonary Lab at Methodist Hospital. In his practice, everyone was welcome. When patients were unable to pay, he waived his fees. This kindness was often returned with vegetables grown in their gardens, baked goods, and homemade wine.

Outside of medicine, Tony relished time with his family and extensive network of friends. He was a natural and prolific storyteller, as proud of his own children’s accomplishments as those of his friends’ children and grandchildren. He was generous with his time and means, quick to offer help and support to anyone in need. He loved to travel and made many lifelong friends abroad, including fishing trips in the Caribbean and countless trips to Italy. He had a loving devotion to opera and was a longtime supporter of The Philadelphia Orchestra. His great loves were 1930s-40s music and film and historical novels. His favorite movies were Casablanca, The Firefly, and McLintock — watched over and over again, untiringly. He also had a deep devotion to the television series M*A*S*H* as he felt a kinship and connection with the medical personnel caring for wounded combatants.

He is survived by his wife Susan; his sisters Kathleen and Theresa; his children Anthony (m: Jennifer), John (m: Kanae), and Celeste (m: Jeremiah); and his treasured grandchildren Sophia and Charlie. He joins in Heaven his parents, sister Angela and her eldest son Dominick, and many beloved friends who passed before him.

He lived a full, wonderful life with meaningful work that made an impact on many lives and a deep and abiding love for his family, friends, and faith.

Relatives and friends are invited to honor Dr. Giampetro’s life at a Visitation on Thursday, January 22, 2026, 10:00 to 10:45 AM at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Road, Gladwyne, PA 19035, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, 2398 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.
