Dorothy “Dotty” Wolfe (nee Wexler), age 102, of Haverford, PA passed away on April 5, 2023. She was born on August 20th, 1920, in Springfield, Illinois to Jacob and Helen Wexler (nee Klein).
Dotty is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Spivak, and grandson Paul Arthur Spivak. She had two younger siblings, Cece (Wexler) Cooper and Arthur Wexler, both deceased.
Dotty was loved and admired by all who knew her for her kindness and intellect, as well as her cheerful nature and matter of fact approach to life.
Dotty attended the University of Illinois and received a degree in journalism. Dotty met her husband, Martin “Marty” Wolfe
(deceased), while in university. They married in 1942. Dorothy studied mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and earned her PhD there in 1963. She taught for two years at Swarthmore College, and for many years at Widener University, retiring in 1985.
After retirement, Dotty and Marty spent summers traveling across Europe and elsewhere; Santa Barbara was a special favorite. She also loved visiting with family. Dotty volunteered for many years with the with the League of Women Voters. She also volunteered with Planned Parenthood escorting women past lines of protestors. At the age of 75, Dotty and Marty moved into the Quadrangle, a retirement community in Haverford, PA. They were both active members of the community, working in the Quadrangle library among other activities. She still could be seen occasionally tackling a new and challenging math problem at her living room table. She always said she wanted to be the Grandma Moses of mathematics. She knitted socks, worked needlepoint, tutored disadvantaged students in math, and read a great deal, mostly regency romances and mystery stories.
