Donald L. Riley, long time resident of Broomall Pa, and formerly the Brookline Section of Havertown, passed away on November 12, 2025 at the age of 93.
Born in Upper Darby Township, PA, Donald was the son of the late Lorenzo Johnson and Helen Lamb (née Perry) Riley.
Donald lived a life characterized by kindness, integrity, and a deep commitment to both his family and career.
Donald was a graduate of Haverford High School, Class of 1949. He graduated from Drexel University, Class of 1968, and made his mark as a Mechanical Engineer in the engineering services industry. Donald began his engineering career at D’Ambly, Inc, a consulting engineering firm based in Philadelphia. In the early 1980’s he and several colleagues formed the engineering consulting firm of Brandt, Ricci, Riley, Inc. which was based in Paoli and later Devon, PA. Don’s attention to detail and dedication to his work earned him admiration from colleagues and friends alike. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy, an experience that instilled values of responsibility and pride which carried throughout his life.
Donald cherished his years growing up in Havertown, where he spent part of his youth working at the Brookline Theatre, the sole movie house in town.
His family meant the world to him, and he held a special place in his heart for his wife, Joan, whom he revered as a true treasure. Together, they created a warm and loving home, nurtured by Donald’s unwavering support and affection.
In addition to his professional achievements, Donald had a zest for life and a host of hobbies that brought him joy. He delighted in fixing and repairing things, making models, playing guitar, and exploring music across various genres. An avid reader and puzzle enthusiast, he found solace and satisfaction in the simple pleasures of life. His passion for maintaining a beautifully landscaped exterior was evident in his commitment to yard work, and he was known for enjoying a 5 PM gin Martini as he took in the fruits of his labor.
Donald’s upbringing in the Presbyterian faith was integral to his values, and he later raised his children in the Catholic tradition, demonstrating his commitment to fostering a strong moral foundation within his family. He was a kind and caring man, inspiring all who encountered him through his actions and approach to life.
Donald was the beloved husband of the late Joan M. Riley; the loving father of Donald Riley, Jr. (Kim), Michael Riley (Connie), Joseph Riley (Noel Garingan), Marilou Donny (Frank), and Ginger Scrimshire (Donovan). He is also survived by his dear eight grandchildren, Brendon, Lauren, Ryan, Kristy Rose, Megan, Matthew, Sean, and Lily, his 2 step-grandchildren, Vance and Elijah Scrimshire, as well as his 2 cherished great-grandchildren, Lucia, and Jude. Donald is predeceased by his sister, Doreen Dwyer.
Family and friends are invited to honor Donald’s life at a Visitation on Friday, November 28, 2025, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, followed by a Funeral Service commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment private.
