Don Richard Lewis

Don Richard Lewis, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Berwyn, surrounded by family on September 18, 2023.  

Don's life was a remarkable journey that began with the love of his mother and grandmother after the tragic loss of his father during World War II, just before Don was born. 

Don's sense of duty and adventure led him to join the Navy after high school, where he sailed the seas for two years. In 1960, the destroyer that he was on had a 65 degree roll caused by a swell that killed one sailor onboard and swept 5 other young sailors out to sea. Don was nearly lost, as well, and his survival was a testament to his strength, resilience and just plain good luck.

After completing his Naval service, Don returned to Philadelphia, where he worked for a bank while earning his Bachelor's Degree from Saint Joseph's University. Following that, he joined his father-in-law in the coal reclamation business. When the company later changed hands, Don began his own painting company where he formed deep friendships with clients and others, whose company he enjoyed until his death.

Don and Joan were teenagers when they fell in love and their love withstood the test of time, as they celebrated 56 years of marriage last June. Their greatest joy was their family, especially their two sons, Andrew and Bryan, their daughters-in-law, Monica and Lauren, and their grandchildren, Jackson and Ellie. Don is also survived by his brother Harold Frederick Lewis, Jr. and his wife Brenda.

Don will be dearly missed but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him and love him. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 10:00-11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at Wayne United Methodist Church, 210 S. Wayne Ave, Wayne, PA 19087, followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment Private.
