A tribute to Des Brennan

Des was born on June 25, 1979, in Dublin, Ireland to Mary and Desmond Brennan and grew up happily with four brothers (John, Patrick, Gerard and Martin) born within six years. As a twin, Des learned early the value of thinking of others, a quality that became one of his defining traits throughout his life.

A hardworking and dedicated student, Des attended Naas Christian Brothers and went on to graduate from University College Dublin.

Des was a tremendous athlete and earned numerous accolades in Gaelic football and rugby, but his greatest sporting passion was always hurling. Naas, Kildare, Mayo and Kilkenny were his teams.

The Brennan brothers were thick as thieves and spent hours together on the playing fields. Des was blessed to be a part of a family whose closeness and bond were clear to all who knew them. His parents instilled in their children strong values, a love of sport, and the belief that family always comes first. He cherished summers spent on his grandparents’ farms, making lifelong memories with cousins, aunts, and uncles gathered from near and far.

In April 2004, Des moved to America with AIB to set up their New York office. He quickly established a chosen family of friends in the United States, a blend of expats and Americans who appreciated his gift for balancing hard work with a playful approach to life. They loved enjoying so many nights in the city and always looked forward to the 12 Pubs of Christmas each year.

Only 6 weeks before he was scheduled to move back to Ireland in July 2006, Des met his wife Amy at a bar after a game with his “12 Angry Men” soccer team in Manhattan. They met the old fashion way, over a Bud Light and with good conversation. Amy and Des spent the next 9 consecutive nights going out on dates, discovering New York City together and finding they never had enough time to talk and laugh. Des had found a home in Amy and never left.

Their New York years were blessed with an incredible circle of friends who they shared countless adventures with, embracing life to the fullest together.

They got married in July 2009 in Kildare, Ireland. True to Amy and Des’ love of bringing people together, their guests partied into the wee hours of the morning, and the wedding festivities even included their own Ryder Cup and a U2 concert in Dublin.

Together, they discovered a love deeper and more enduring than either of them ever thought possible.

After two joyful years as newlyweds, they made Philadelphia their home and began building the family that became the center of their world. Over the next five years, they welcomed Bella, Charlie, and Grace, filling their home with music, laughter, and an endless supply of love and good energy.

The kids were the light of Des’ life, each one knowing that Dad would have a hundred questions when they returned home from school or practice. He wanted to be involved in every detail so he could soak up every moment they were experiencing. He treasured the time spent traveling with the kids to lacrosse tournaments, especially the one-on-one moments along the way. He loved cheering them on from the sidelines—often very loudly—and took great pride in encouraging them to be their very best.

Des loved music and was famously loyal to the same 50 songs on Pandora—perhaps its last remaining subscriber. Whether on a long car ride or relaxing in an Adirondack chair on the back patio, he was happiest with good music playing in the background. He especially loved sitting on the deck in Sea Isle City, NJ, watching the sun set over the bay and taking in the sea air.

Des had a tremendous career in finance, spending almost 10 years at AIB Bank in both Ireland and New York and then nearly 15 years at TD Bank. He was cherished by so many team members that he mentored and coached. He was proud to have built his career through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Most of all, Des was known for his generosity. He never forgot a birthday, delighted in treating friends and family to a meal or thoughtful gift, and was always ready to help someone in need. He remembered the small details that mattered to people and had a remarkable ability to sense when someone was struggling. Whether offering a kind word, a helping hand, or quietly supporting a homeless man he passed each day on his walk to work in New York, Des consistently put others before himself.

Even though Des battled leukemia in three different periods over the last 8 years, he never let it slow him down. He endured countless doctors’ appointments, hundreds of medicines and literal months at a time in the hospital trying to beat the disease. He gave it his all but didn’t want it to be part of his story. He rarely brought it up with others and tucked it away as much as possible. With quiet strength and extraordinary grace, he endured more than most could imagine, never complaining and never losing sight of the life he loved. He just kept saying “hold fast - all storms pass” and quoting Churchill “if you are going through hell, keep going”.

Des loved to travel and his favorite places outside of Ireland were Nantucket, Paris and Italy. Des and Amy loved to arrive in the city with little on the agenda, so they had time to drink champagne and watch the city go by. He loved taking the kids to New York and spending time there each Christmas.

No matter where life took him, Des carried Ireland in his heart. He read the Irish newspaper every morning and every night on his phone from cover to cover. Every single story. He streamed every GAA game and yelled from his sofa in Berwyn, PA to cheer his team thousands of miles away. His brothers, ‘the lads,’ were his favorite people and they could make him laugh so hard that he couldn’t breathe. Their annual trip to Kenmare for their famous Brothers Golf Tournament was one of his favorite traditions. No matter what, he found a way to get there each September.

He was rooted in tradition. He loved doing things ‘properly’ … whether that was tucking the sheets in your bed so tight that he could have mimicked a military officer or folding socks just right. He felt most calm in a pristine house and loved to clean the garage just in case someone wanted to see it. He loved the traditions of Thanksgiving and Christmas and looked forward to spending time together as a family and watching Christmas movies.

He cherished family dinners, where the day's stories were shared and even the smallest accomplishments were celebrated. In the evenings, he loved sitting by the fireplace, the scent of Irish turf in the air, reflecting on life and dreaming about the years ahead.

He was rarely seen without his favorite gray Waynesborough hoodie and navy hat—an outfit his children affectionately called his “uniform.” He could watch The Office endlessly, solved many mysteries on Law & Order, and embraced Philadelphia sports with enthusiasm, especially the Eagles, Sixers, and Villanova basketball. On game days, he was happiest relaxing in his well-worn leather chair, an IPA in hand, cheering on his teams.

He was a man of deep faith who often turned to Padre Pio in prayer during life's most difficult moments. He believed that cardinals and ladybugs were gentle signs from heaven and took comfort in their presence. When you see one in the days ahead, may it serve as a reminder that Des is with you still, watching over those he loved.

On his final trip to the hospital, Des brought with him Lives of the Stoics, a book chronicling ancient lives marked by courage, resilience, and grace in the face of adversity—a quiet acceptance of the things we cannot control. In its pages, he found comfort and strength. Yet those who knew him would agree that he did not need to finish the book to understand its lessons. Through the way he loved his family, faced illness with dignity, and met life's challenges with quiet determination, Des embodied those virtues every day. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, character, and perseverance that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.

Although his life was far too short, Des made the most of every day. If you knew him, you loved him, and all of us are better for having had him in our lives.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and kindness shown to our family during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers or charitable donations, our family invites you to honor Des’ greatest legacy—his children.

Contributions to the Brennan Family Education Fund will help support educational opportunities for Bella, Charlie, and Grace in the years ahead. Your generosity will be a meaningful tribute to the love, guidance, and encouragement Des so faithfully provided and would have continued to give throughout their lives. Any gift, no matter the size is a lasting investment in their future and a reflection of the care and support surrounding them.
