David Richard Herbst

David “Dave” Richard Herbst, aged 95, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026. He was the dear son of the late Malcolm and Ester (Clancy) Herbst. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sheila (Fleming) Herbst, and his sister, Mary Turner.

Survived by his cherished children, Margaret “Peg” Herbst Sanders (William Eugene), Joseph Herbst, Kathleen Hester, Mary Gunther Paynic, and Julia Herbst (Jim Wentz), Dave was also adored by his grandchildren, Matt and Chris Herbst, Katherine and Bridget Gunther, and Devon and James “Riley” Hester.

After completing a PhD in Organic Chemistry at Wayne State University, Dave dedicated much of his career as a research organic chemist at Wyeth/Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, leaving a lasting impact in his field. A man of deep Christian faith, he served as a longtime elder in his church, First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport, offering guidance and support to his community. In addition to his love for spending time with family, Dave found great joy in gardening, and after retirement, he spent more than two decades as a dedicated hospital volunteer, a role he greatly enjoyed.

Relatives and friends are invited to Dave's Viewing 5:30-7:00 PM on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 366 W Lancaster Ave, Wayne, PA 19087. A funeral service will follow on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport, 515 DeKalb St, Bridgeport, PA 19405, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery in Villanova, PA.
