Darrel E. "Sonny" Shaffstall

Darrel E. Shaffstall, of Southwest Philadelphia, affectionately known as Sonny, passed away on July 11, 2025, at the age of 87. Sonny fully lived up to his nickname, as he had a heart of gold and stole the hearts of everyone he met. Sonny exemplified a life filled with passion, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family and interests.

As a devoted fan of baseball, Sonny held a special place in his heart for the Philadelphia Phillies. His enthusiasm for baseball was evident, as he spent countless hours not just watching games but also serving as an umpire for local little leagues and bar leagues. Sonny also loved cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles - GO BIRDS!

Sonny cherished the moments he spent with his family, creating memories that will be treasured by his loved ones for years to come. He is survived by his daughter, Terry Murphy (Scott), and his grandchildren: Samantha Boettcher (David), Lindsey Stephens (Jarod Karns), Colleen Carter (Josh), and Scott Murphy, Jr. (Rita). He also leaves behind his beloved great grandchildren, Skylar, Max, Madeleine, and Vivien, who enriched his life with their laughter and love, along with his dog, Teddy, who was his “little buddy”.

Sonny is preceded in death by his wife, Caroline (Nee Henry) Shaffstall, who he loved and cherished dearly. He also reunites with his siblings, Nancy and Bill, his parents, William and Florence (Nee Moyer) Shaffstall, and his former son-in-law Bob Stephens. The legacy of love and friendship Sonny nurtured in his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Gathering to honor Sonny's life on July 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Knoetgen - Donohue Funeral Home in Morton, Pennsylvania. This gathering will serve as a time for reflection and remembrance of a beloved family member and friend whose spirit will continue to inspire those left behind.
