Daniel Clemens Barry

Daniel C. Barry passed away in the early morning of December 12, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Norristown, PA in 1946, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Emily M.(Filewicz) Barry.  Daniel was the beloved husband of Joanne M. (Harris) Barry; loving Father of Jon A. Barry and Marc A. Barry (Kimberly); and the caring Grandfather of Allison Wolfarth, Molly Barry, and Madison Barry.

Danny Barry was an intelligent, charismatic gentleman and Patriot.  He was a proud graduate of Marple Newtown High School. He met Joanne Harris, his wife of 54 years during his time as a student.  The two were married in 1969 after Danny served in the US Air Force from 1965 to 1969 where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Vietnam War.

After serving his country, Danny became well established in the Greater Philadelphia restaurant and catering industry which was driven by his fondness for fine dining.  As Executive Chef at the Brownstone Inn in Edgemont, PA, his love of the culinary arts was rewarded by winning Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best of Philly” for his Cream of Mushroom Soup in 1975. He then founded the Les Grandes Gourmands, a membership only fine dining society, that grew to over 75 members and was recognized by the Bulletin for its dedication to an “era gone by.”

His love of food was infectious and his desire to train the up-and-coming chefs of the day resulted in the creation of The Cooking School, The Waiter and Waitressing School and The Cooking School Restaurant in Media, PA.  Danny was recognized by the Delaware County Council and received the “Distinguished Business Achievement Award” for inaugurating several new businesses and training programs in less than three years.  He expanded his business to the local Cable television market with a cooking show named “EveryDay’s a Holiday” where he, his staff, and family would bring to life classic recipes with his twist.

Danny was an avid World War II memorabilia collector and history buff.  Upon retiring from the restaurant industry, he dedicated his time to serving the local VFW’s, going to flea markets and attending Military shows.  At the peak of his service, he was elected Commander of Media VFW Post 3460 and PA District 7 Commander.

Daniel was a loving husband, father, Pop Pop, Pop B and a good friend to many, always ready to share a story or lend a hand.  He attended his children’s and grandchildren’s various sports games and activities as well as spoke on Veteran’s Day at their schools.

In life, as well as in his final fight, Danny was incredibly resilient. He had the strength of a warrior and the spirit of a champion. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation 9:30-10:30 AM Monday, December 18, 2023 at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. The Funeral Mass for Daniel will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/live/rlym--gk780?si=iXLajsVlwS1hPQly   Interment will be held privately at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Coatesville VA Medical Center, Hospice Unit, 1400 Blackhorse Road, Coatesville, PA 19320, would be appreciated.
