Dr. Carlos Fink, a resident of Mexico City and Berwyn, PA, since 2012, died May
30th at the age of 88. Dr. Fink was born in Mexico City, Mexico, where he
attended the German School. He went on to the National Autonomous University
of Mexico, where he received an MD from the School of Medicine in 1954. He
completed his general surgery residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland,
Oregon, serving as chief resident his last year, where he met and married his
wife Norma (Smith). He then trained in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at
Presbyterian Hospital and Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
When his residency was completed, he returned to Mexico City with his family.
Aside from his private practice at the Hospital Angeles, he performed
cardiovascular surgery at the General Hospital in Mexico City for forty-six years,
attending to the most impoverished, at times donating his own blood and
ensuring the necessary procedures were performed regardless of whether they
were covered by the government. He found time to operate in various cities in
Mexico and was recognized by the states of Tabasco and Nayarit. He was a
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and his appointments included Chief
of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the General Hospital, Professor of
Surgery at National Autonomous University of Mexico, and President of the
Medical Society of the General Hospital of Mexico. He authored numerous
papers on the subjects of his research, and was a frequent guest lecturer at
surgical meetings in Latin America, the United States and Europe. He trained
many surgical residents from Mexico and abroad who became distinguished
cardiovascular surgeons.
He was a natural born athlete who excelled at soccer, baseball, handball and
tennis. A loving and devoted husband and father he dedicated his life to his
family and his profession. He is survived by his wife, Norma, and his children,
Teresa (Stephen Varenhorst), Carlos (Hayley), Cristina and Antonio (Ariadna),
and his seven wonderful grandchildren, Carlos Antonio, Pablo, Sofia, Mathias,
Daniel, Emilio and Audrey.
He was the happiest person we have ever known.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 1, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Catherine's
of Sienna, 102 Aberdeen Ave, Wayne.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Doctors Without
