Carl Baumert, Jr.

d. January 1, 1753

Carl A. Baumert, Jr., PE, of Newtown Square, PA.

Born in Philadelphia in 1929, he was the son of the late Carl and Florence Baumert. He attended Northeast High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) in 1951. Following graduation, Carl served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1951-1953 at Fort Belvoir, VA, and in the Korean War where he was a platoon commander and battalion recon officer, for which he received the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Service medals. Upon returning from service, Carl once again settled in the Tacony section of Philadelphia, PA, until he married Mildred in 1957.

Three children later, the family relocated to Bala Cynwyd and then Glen Mills, PA. The family recently celebrated Carl & Mildred's 60th Anniversary. Carl enjoyed being outdoors, and was involved in the Boy Scouts and boating in his younger years, and gardening later in life. He relished time with the family, taking them on excursions throughout the Middle Atlantic States.

A distinguished structural engineer, Carl A. Baumert, Jr., PE joined Keast & Hood Co. in 1956 and served as a principal of the firm from 1963 to 1995. He continued as a senior consultant from 1995 until his retirement in December of 2014. Carl is most noted for his pioneering work in the field of structural engineering and historic preservation, impacting standards for building's assessment and rehabilitation. He greatly enjoyed working on historic buildings, learning about both the history of the site and delving into the details of how older structures were constructed in order to apply appropriate repair techniques. His work as the lead structural consultant on the restoration of Philadelphia's City Hall, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and countless other iconic buildings has left a lasting impression on the city as well as the engineers that he mentored throughout his career. Carl served on several committees in ASCE and ASTM, and chaired two of them for several years. He was voted Structural Engineer of the Year and entered into the Delaware Valley Engineering Hall of Fame in 2012.

Carl was the beloved husband of Mildred Baumert; loving father of Fred, Andrea (Joseph), and Beth; devoted grandfather of Christine and Abigail; predeceased by his grandson Jonathan.
