Betty (Hewes) Grebey, 84, of Chester Springs, PA passed away on February 14, 2018 after a brief illness. Born in Sullivan County on March 28, 1933, Betty was the daughter of the late Jack and Hannah (Worthington) Hewes and the beloved wife of the late Charles Grebey.
She attended high school in both Towanda, PA and in Mimico, Ontario Canada. Betty earned her Bachelor's Degree from Kutztown University and her Master's from Drexel University. In 1957-58, Betty and Charlie taught English and reading to the children of U.S. Army personnel in Germany. She taught library science at Villanova University for many years before working in the Coatesville School District and finally in the Downingtown School District as the Chairperson of the library department before retiring in 1997. But, retirement did not slow her down. She was a devoted volunteer at the Chester Springs Library in Yellow Springs, PA, and she was an organizer of the Pennsylvania School Librarian Association conference for many years. She enjoyed collecting Hummel figurines, cross-stitching and needlepoint, and while Charlie was alive they both earned their pilot licenses and enjoyed flying together. But, Betty was most passionate about reading, never being seen without a book or two in her possession at all times. She instilled and encouraged that passion in many of the young people in her life.
Betty is survived by her sister, Harriet Vargason, her brother Clayton Hewes, and her beloved sheltie, Oban along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Audrey (Hewes) Bowman and her brother Kermit Hewes. Interment will be at a later date in Bradford County. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Betty's name to the Chester Springs Library at Historic Yellow Springs, 1709 Art School Road, Chester Springs, PA 19425 or to your local library.
There will be a celebration of Betty's life at the Chester Springs Library at Historic Yellow Springs, 1709 Art School Road, on Wednesday March 28th from 5-7pm. Those attending are asked to bring a story or memory to share, along with a new or gently used children's book that will be donated to local children in need.
